The Gateway Gallery
The Gateway Gallery at Great Bay Community College is honored to host The Gathering, a solo exhibition of paintings and drawings by artist Patricia Schappler. The exhibit will run from January 21 through March 28, 2025, and is open to the public Monday through Thursday, 7:00 AM to 9:00 PM, and Fridays, 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The college is located at 320 Corporate Drive, Portsmouth, NH.
An opening reception will take place on Tuesday, February 25, from 4:00 PM to 6:30 PM, offering guests the opportunity to meet the artist and explore her work.
Curated by Thomas Devaney, The Gathering highlights Schappler’s masterful focus on the human figure. Through a combination of intricate patterns, body language, and narrative imagery, Schappler draws from literary, mythical, and personal storytelling to explore themes of connection, identity, and belonging.
“I am inspired to search body language and proximity through the strange beauty of pattern and form that reminds us of both faraway lands and home. Through literary nods to biblical, mythical, and personal story, I see the portrait as an intimate connection of our experience, one to the other,” says Schappler.
An East Coast painter and draftsman, Patricia Schappler’s work has been exhibited nationally. She is an active member of the Portrait Society of America, the Pastel Society of America, the Women’s Caucus for the Arts, and PoetsArtists. Her art delves into the complexities of human relationships, often drawing inspiration from her family, students, and colleagues. Schappler’s narrative-driven work questions how we define and protect “home,” presenting it as a sacred and expansive concept woven into the fabric of everyday life.
